Outliers
The criterion which was used for identifying outliers was identification of the case that would result in the largest reduction to the Q-statistic if it were removed. In this review, the outlier identified by the DSTAT program was the effect size associated with the Andujo (1988) study.
This was especially interesting since the sample sizes, comparison groups, ages of subjects, statistics, and measures are almost identical to the McRoy and Zurcher (1983) study. However, the size of the effect is much greater (d = â 1.3358, p < .001 for study-level effect). The difference in ethnic or racial identity here between transethnically-adopted Mexican-American adolescents and same-ethnic group adoptees is a distinct and consistent one. Why the magnitude of the effect would be so much greater in this instance, compared to the African-American sample, is an area for future study. The element of biracial heritage may come into play here. None of the transethnic adoptees in the Andujo study were ethnically-mixed, whereas seventy-three percent of the transracial adoptees in the McRoy and Zurcher study were of mixed racial heritage. This may have meant that the Mexican-American adoptees in Caucasian families may have been more aware of their ethnic difference from the adoptive family (because of the physical and perhaps language dissimilarity) and, therefore more inclined to describe themselves by color and ethnicity. Hence, a stronger effect of transethnic adoption.
In addition to the above results, an overall effect size, calculated for the individual effect sizes for the sixteen racial/ethnic identity dependent measures in studies, was d = â 0.4402. (See Table 4 for a stem and leaf plot of the individual effect sizes for these dependent measures of racial/ethnic identity.)
